Plan ahead for enrollment dates
HealthCare.gov says applications for 2027 coverage open November 1, 2026. Prepare now and aim to complete your application and plan selection by December 15, 2026 for January coverage, then follow the insurer’s first-payment instructions.
Confirm the closing date before relying on an extension. CMS’s published 2025 final rule sets a November 1–December 15 window on the federal platform beginning with plan year 2027. However, the HealthCare.gov general dates page currently still lists January 15 as the closing date. These official pages are not yet aligned. Check the current 2027 Marketplace notice or contact the Marketplace directly; do not assume you can wait until January. Sources: CMS enrollment rule and HealthCare.gov dates.
What if your circumstances change?
Losing qualifying coverage, marriage, a new child or some moves may create a Special Enrollment Period. Eligibility, documentation, application windows and start dates depend on the event. A qualifying event does not automatically guarantee uninterrupted coverage. Review the official Special Enrollment Period guidance promptly.
Gather useful information safely
Have household and applicant details, your expected 2027 income, information about available employer coverage, current insurance details, and relevant eligibility documents ready. For self-employed people, organized income and expense records can help create a reasonable income estimate. Your application may request additional proof.
Make a list of your doctors, preferred hospitals and regular prescriptions, including doses. Record whether you expect major changes in work, family size or coverage. Do not send Social Security numbers, immigration documents, tax returns or medical records through the public callback form, ordinary email or WhatsApp. Call first to discuss the appropriate document process.
Compare the coverage you will actually use
Networks and referrals
An HMO usually focuses on its network, with emergency exceptions; referral requirements depend on the plan. An EPO generally covers network care except emergencies. A PPO may permit out-of-network care at a higher cost without a referral. POS plans typically require specialist referrals and have different network costs. Check the exact plan’s documents rather than relying on its label alone. HealthCare.gov explains plan types.
Ask both the insurer and your provider whether the doctor participates in the specific plan and year. Check each prescription’s formulary status, pharmacy network, tier, prior authorization and any quantity limits. A familiar insurer’s name does not establish that your current doctor or medicine is covered by every product it sells.
Premiums and costs when you receive care
Compare the monthly premium with the deductible, copayments, coinsurance and covered in-network out-of-pocket limit. Some services may be covered before the deductible. Premiums, noncovered services and certain out-of-network expenses do not count toward the usual in-network out-of-pocket limit. Review the Summary of Benefits and Coverage for each option.
Consider a realistic year of care: routine visits, prescriptions, specialist appointments and potential hospital treatment. The lowest premium may not produce the lowest overall cost for your household.
Check financial assistance through the application
A premium tax credit may reduce the monthly premium if you meet the applicable requirements. Eligibility involves more than an income percentage and can depend on household composition, tax filing, access to other coverage and the rules for the coverage year. Estimate the income expected for the year of coverage and report relevant changes.
HealthCare.gov says its 2027 income levels and savings information will be available November 1. Before then, 2026 tools provide only a rough planning estimate. Do not treat an older subsidy estimate as a confirmed 2027 price. Review the current Marketplace savings guidance and the eligibility notice from your application.
If eligible for income-based cost-sharing reductions, choosing an eligible Silver plan can reduce deductibles, copayments and coinsurance. These savings differ from the premium tax credit. Confirm the savings shown in your eligibility notice and compare actual Silver options. Read the official cost-sharing guidance.
