HOW WE HELP

Start with your situation.

Tax preparation begins with understanding your income, documents and circumstances. Bring your tax forms and questions; we help organize the information needed to prepare the applicable federal return.

  • Individuals and families
  • Self-employed and 1099 workers
  • Current-year and prior-year returns
A PRACTICAL SERVICE GUIDE

Know what needs to be filed.

Your filing situation depends on the income you received, your filing status, dependents and other circumstances. Wages, retirement income, interest, investment transactions, rental income and self-employment may require different records. Bring every relevant form, including corrected forms, rather than selecting only the documents you think matter.

Individuals and families

Collect identification, taxpayer information, income forms and the prior-year return if available. Tell us about changes such as a marriage, separation, new dependent, move, education expenses or a change in health coverage. Eligibility for deductions and credits must be reviewed using the applicable year’s rules and supporting records.

Self-employed and 1099 workers

A Form 1099 is one part of your records. Organize all business income, including amounts for which no form was issued, along with expense records and any business-use information. Keep personal and business expenses distinguishable. Tell us about business assets, vehicle use and estimated tax payments so the applicable reporting can be reviewed.

From records to a prepared return

  1. Call to discuss the years and return types involved.
  2. Gather the requested records and ask how to provide them.
  3. Review missing information and questions about your circumstances.
  4. Review the prepared return and the applicable filing and payment steps.

Current filing reminder: October 2026

For most taxpayers who requested a valid extension for their 2025 individual federal return, the filing deadline is October 15, 2026. An extension to file does not extend the time to pay. Disaster relief and other special circumstances may change a taxpayer’s deadline.

CHOOSING A TAX PREPARER

Questions to ask before you book.

Compare preparers by the help you need, their qualifications, how they handle your documents and how they explain the price. A clear conversation before an appointment helps you understand what is included.

  • Ask whether the paid preparer has a current IRS preparer tax identification number and will sign the completed return.
  • Explain your income sources, prior-year filing issues and business activity so the preparer can discuss the relevant experience.
  • Ask for the fee basis and which services are included. Be cautious about fees tied to the size of a refund.
  • Ask about electronic filing, your copy of the return and help with questions after filing.
  • Review the completed return before signing. Never sign a blank return.

Preparing a return and representing a taxpayer before the IRS are different services. Representation authority depends on credentials and qualifications; ask specifically if you need that service.
